MARYVILLE, Mo. — March 31 marked the end of the filing period for candidates seeking a spot on the Aug. 4 primary election ballot.
Among a number of other races, the August election will decide which Nodaway County officeholders earn their party’s nomination for the Nov. 3 general election.
The South District commissioner and sheriff races have multiple candidates and Nodaway County voters will decide in August who will be on the ballot in November.
In the South District commissioner race, four men are running on the Republican ballot: Frank Myers, Joe Drake, Scott A. Walk and Charles E. Smail; and four men are running on the Democratic ballot: David Godsey, Steve Day, Robert D. Lager and Patrick “Pat” Nelson.
The seat is being vacated by current commissioner Robert Stiens, who is not running for the seat again.
In the race for sheriff, Doug Lager will face current Sheriff Randy Strong, for the Republican spot on November’s ballot. The winner of that race will face Democrat Darren White, who is unopposed for his party’s nomination.
Also on the ballot is Republican Dee O’Riley who is unopposed for her party’s nomination for the office of Public Administrator. She will face Democrat incumbent Sara “Diane” Thomsen in the November vote.
According to the Nodaway County clerk’s office, other incumbents seeking reelection include North District Commissioner Chris Burns, Republican; Assessor Rex Wallace, Democrat; Treasurer/Collector Marilyn Jenkins, Democrat; Surveyor, Adam Teale, Republican; and Coroner Vince Shelby, Republican.
The August ballot will also include candidates for open committee member seats in eight of Nodaway County’s 15 townships. For townships that do not have people file, the committee will appoint someone to the seat, according to Nodaway County Clerk Melinda Patton.
Townships are governmental subdivisions typically responsible for the upkeep of rural roads not maintained by the Missouri Department of Transportation. Each township has one committeeman and one committeewoman for each party. None of those running for committee seats have opposition.
All candidates who filed, did so as Republican. They include the following: Byron A. Clark, Atchison Township; Doris (Kathy) DeVault, Hughes Towhship; Monica Patton and Dean Adwell for Jackson Township; Cheryl Chesnut and Delbert Chesnut, Monroe Township; Jill Agnes Blackford and John Eldon Blackford, Nodaway Township; Jessie M. Smith and Mark R. Watkins, Polk Township; Phyllis Carmichael, Union Township; and Kay Wilson and Tim Lance, White Cloud Township.
