MARYVILLE, Mo. — While many traditions have been put on hold this year, one summer staple is set to continue.

Maryville football coach Matt Webb posted on social media that the seventh annual Spoofhound Football Backers Golf Tournament will be held as planned on July 17 at Mozingo Lake Recreation Park in Maryville.

COVID-19 restrictions will be followed, but the event will be held at the usual time. In past years, it has been held the same week as the Nodaway County Fair due to the increase in visitors to town. Although the fair has been canceled, the tournament will go on.

“It is critical,” Webb said of holding the tournament. “Our football program has benefited greatly from people supporting our golf tournament.”

There will be two tee times available, 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Lunch will be served between the two tee times.

“We wanted to create something for alumni, after you graduate, you have an opportunity to come back and enjoy and remember times in high school,” said Webb, who has coached the Spoofhounds for the past eight years. “For me personally, I enjoy it. I’m an alum from Maryville in the early 1990s. I know how much I enjoy it, seeing old classmates and teammates that I played with. Again, personally, I like this event.”

Webb noted that last year more than 40 four-person teams competed in the event. There is no cap on how many teams can enter. The deadline to enter will be July 10.

A shuttle will be available to and from the course, while prizes will be awarded to each flight.

Current football players, donning their jerseys, will welcome golfers to the course and carry their bags to golf carts.

“The current football players are around and what is important to see is developing relationships,” Webb said. “Sometimes you never know who you will meet on a golf course. Maybe a junior or senior might meet someone that will give them their first jobs. You can develop relationships that can help you in the future. There are always added benefits.”

There are three sponsorship levels for the tournament: yellow, white and green. Each will include a hole sponsorship. Green and white sponsors will get special recognition on the course. New for 2020, for those sponsorship levels, is recognition in home game programs (white and green) or special recognition at homecoming (green).
