Rosalyn Townsend-Kinder

1923-2018 

Rosalyn Townsend-Kinder, age 95, of Maryville, Missouri, formerly of Braddyville, Iowa entered into peace Sunday, December 30, 2018 at the Maryville Living Center. Funeral Celebration of Life Services were held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 3, 2019 at Ritchie Funeral Home in Clarinda, Iowa with Scott Davison officiating. Visitation was held Thursday, January 3 at Ritchie Funeral Home from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. with the family greeting friends prior to the service. Interment was held at the Braddyville Cemetery in Braddyville.  Memorials may be directed to Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Clarinda, Iowa, where we ‘Celebrate Life’.

Rosalyn Jean (Garrett) Townsend-Kinder was born January 25, 1923 in Essex, Iowa to Evertt Garrett and May (Young) Garrett. The family lived in several communities as Rosalyn was growing up including Essex, Coburg (where she started school as a kindergartener riding a wooden blue school bus), New Market, Siam, Bedford and Braddyville. She was a graduate of Braddyville High School. Rosalyn was united in marriage April 7, 1946 to Darwin Townsend in Braddyville, Iowa. They were blessed with three children, Sandra, Don and Donna. Darwin passed away November 20, 1985. Rosalyn and B.H. Kinder were married January 7, 1992 in Rock Port, Missouri and he passed away in 1993.

Rosalyn began her varied working career following high school at Citizen’s State Bank in Clarinda and at the Ann Arbor Nursery in Shenandoah. She worked at a paper mill during the war in Camas, Washington while Darwin was in the service. After the children were grown, she worked as a cook at Bethesda Care Center which is now Westridge Care Center.

Rosalyn was an active member of the Braddyville Christian Church. She was very involved with the youth as a Sunday School teacher, CYF and Bible School leader. Her family was very important to her and she loved being with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren. Rosalyn loved to sing and dance. She enjoyed nature, watching the birds, her flowers and animals. She enjoyed baking and sharing her baked goodies with the neighbors.  

Preceding Rosalyn in death are her parents; husbands, Darwin Townsend and B.H. Kinder; granddaughter, April Townsend and grandson, Justin Townsend. 

Left to cherish Rosalyn’s memory are her children, Sandra Devine of College Springs, Iowa, Don Townsend of Clearmont, Missouri and Donna Townsend of Braddyville, Iowa; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and five great, great-grandchildren; brothers, Bob Garrett of Kansas City, Missouri and Ken Garrett and wife Lois of Clarinda, Iowa; a niece and two nephews and friends.
