Maralee (Almquist) Prather
Maralee (Almquist) Prather, age 92, of Clarinda, Iowa, entered into peace Thursday, December 20, 2018, at Clarinda Regional Health Center. Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 22, 2019 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Interment of ashes will be at the Essex Cemetery in Essex prior to the service. Memorials may be given in her name. Memories can be shared with the family at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa, where we ‘Celebrate Life’.
Maralee(Matheny) Prather was born October19, 1926 to Clarence and Lizzie (Erwin) Matheny at the home in Westboro, Missouri. She was a member of the Westboro Methodist Church and graduated Westboro high school in 1944. After graduation, she worked at Perfex and later at Brown’s Shoe Fit in Shenandoah, Iowa. In November 1945 she married Merrill Robert Almquist at her parent’s home in Westboro. A daughter, Jenell Karen, was born November 12, 1946.
They lived for a short time in Shenandoah then in Essex, Iowa. They then moved to a farm northwest of Essex and began farming and became members of the Evangelical Church in Essex. In 1955 they moved and bought a farm near Coin, Iowa and became members of the Presbyterian Church in Coin. In 1971 they moved and bought a farm near Northboro, Iowa. Merrill passed away in 1973.
Maralee worked at the Shenandoah Chamber of Commerce and Mae Farmer’s Dress Shop in Shenandoah. She obtained her realtors license and worked for Shirley’s Realty in Maryville, Missouri. She also volunteered at the St. Francis Hospital gift shop in Maryville and was a member of the Maryville Garden Club. Maralee married Lynn Prather in 1997 in Arizona and they moved to Maryville. Lynn passed away in 2012. Maralee enjoyed her family, playing cards, visiting with friends and neighbors and traveling to Germany, Austria, Holland, France, Alaska, Mexico, Hawaii and many states.
She is preceded in death by husband Merrill Almquist, husband, Lynn Prather, her parents, brothers Sonny Matheny, Richard Matheny, Wendell Matheny, sister, Elizabeth (Roger) Rasmussen.
She is survived by daughter Jenell and David Anderson, grandchildren Lee (Susan) Anderson, Alexandria, Virginia, Lori (Jerry) Ruscko, Greeley, Colorado, great grandchildren Claire and Eli Wood, Evan and Maia Anderson, three step great grandchildren Jake, Natalie and Zach Ruscko, sister Dorothy and Carrol Green, Westboro, and a sister-in-law Lola Matheny as well as many nieces and nephews.
