Family weekend

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Parents and families of Northwest Missouri State University students will gather for a weekend of entertainment, athletic events and other festivities during the campus' annual Family Weekend Sept. 27-29.

Weekend highlights include the annual Alumni Awards Banquet on Friday and a Saturday afternoon football game against the University of Central Oklahoma.

Activities surrounding the game will include a Bearcat Zone tailgate celebration and the halftime introduction of Northwest’s Family of the Year.

Comedian Kevin Bozeman will perform at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at the Houston Performing Arts Center. Bozeman has appeared on Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend,” NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” CBS and Fox. Since 2017, his “Dry Bar Comedy” special has received more than 7 million views.

On Saturday, Sept. 28, Arts Fishing Club will perform live music beginning at 7 p.m. at the Raymond J. Courter College Park Pavilion.

Other Saturday activities include a 5K run/walk sponsored by Northwest Athletic Trainers beginning at 7 a.m. at the Lamkin Activity Center circle drive and a pancake breakfast from 8-10:30 a.m. at the Hughes Fieldhouse. Registration is required for both events.

Kickoff for the football game is 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Bearcat Stadium. For ticket information, go to

The Bearcat Zone, Northwest’s tailgate area, opens at 11:30 a.m. in College Park. The pregame gathering will include appearances by Bobby Bearcat, the Bearcat Marching Band, Bearcat Steppers and the Bearcat cheerleaders.

Fans may bring their own food, or a catered meal will be available for $12 ($5 for children 7 and under).

Seven members of the Northwest community will be honored during the Alumni Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Northwest Alumni Association. The event begins with a 6 p.m. social on Friday, Sept. 27, in the J.W. Jones Student Union Ballroom.

Dinner will be served at 6:45 p.m. with the awards presentation following at 8 o'clock.

This year’s honorees are Randell Moore, Michael Rogers, Richard Fulton, Rodney Edge, Allison Strong Hoffmann, Ashley Leger and Brad Jackson.
