MARYVILLE, Mo. — Firefighters quickly doused a blaze that began at a detached garage Thursday afternoon east of Maryville.
Just before 4 p.m., emergency crews responded to the fire outside the home of Carolyn Prothero on Pleasant Drive.
The flames were contained to a large shed and workshop in Prothero's backyard, and no one was hurt.
Prothero said that her neighbor called her when he noticed smoke and flames coming from the garage. Less than a half hour later, the structure was reduced to rubble, with only some support beams still standing.
Inside the 43-year-old building were a skid loader and various other yard and workshop tools, along with furniture that had been stored for The Ministry Center, Prothero said, but she wasn't sure how the fire could have started.
Firefighters from Polk Township and the Maryville Public Safety Fire Division kept the flames from reaching the house itself.
Prothero's son, Jimmy, said that ultimately, it could have been worse.
“You count your blessings,” he said.
