ALBANY, Mo. — An Albany, Missouri couple was sentenced Thursday for abusing an 11-year-old girl in their care.

Jennifer A. Reed, 41, and Raymond E. Burks, 52, were charged last year with several counts of kidnapping, endangering the welfare of a child, domestic assault, armed criminal action and one count of child abuse between them.

Guardians of an 11-year-old girl at the time, Reed and Burks were accused of frequently handcuffing the child to a metal cage, shocking her with a stun gun and often feeding her only a protein shake as a daily meal. Investigators discovered several injuries that indicated the girl had been hit, punched, kicked and struck with a belt as well.

In plea deals with special prosecuting attorney David Baird, both Reed and Burks pleaded guilty in Gentry County court Thursday. According to online court records, both pleaded guilty to two counts each of kidnapping and endangering the welfare of a child.

Reed was sentenced to 22 years in the Department of Corrections, Burks was sentenced to 13.

A third person, Lonnie Johnson, 51, was also charged in connection with the case. Authorities said at the time that he hid some of the items used by Reed and Burks to abuse the girl.

Johnson is charged with one count of evidence tampering and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. He entered a plea of not guilty earlier this year and his case is still in its early stages.
