KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Earlier this month, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph released the names of 19 priests and deacons who Bishop James Johnson Jr. said have substantiated allegations of sexual abuse of children against them.
One of those priests reportedly worked in Maryville in the 1980s.
Stephen Wise, who was laicized and is no longer a priest, worked in the Kansas City-St. Joseph diocese from 1979-1986, with his final two years coming at St. Gregory Barbarigo in Maryville.
A 2008 plaintiff, in a suit brought against Wise, said Wise abused him for about four years while at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Kansas City. In 2011, another plaintiff alleged that Wise abused him for two years while Wise was at Our Lady of the Presentation in Lee’s Summit.
Thirteen of the 19 clerics on the list released by the diocese have died. Two have been permanently removed from ministry and four, including Wise, have been laicized.
