MARYVILLE, Mo. — Maryville artist Ken Nelson, a retired Northwest Missouri State University professor and sculptor, took the Best of Show award in the fine arts category at the Smoky Hill River Festival Art Show held June 14 to 16. 

The Smoky Hill Art Show is a nationally juried show of 130 artists from all over the country. According to the event website, the highly competitive show presents original gallery-quality fine art and contemporary and traditional craft and folk art.

“Steeped in the tradition of a ‘true arts celebration,’ the show provides an exciting opportunity to sell and purchase through a very direct, rewarding and personal experience,” show organizers say on its website.

More than $11,000 in Juror’s Merit awards are given during the event. 

On average, patrons purchase more than $130,000 worth of art each year during the show.
