MARYVILLE, Mo. — Maryville's American Legion Post 100 Memorial Day observance will take place beginning at 11 a.m. Monday, May 27, at the post headquarters, located at 1104 E. Fifth St.
This year's keynote speaker will be Northwest Missouri State University Professor of Geography Mark W. Corson, a retired U.S. Army brigadier general.
Corson served in the regular Army from 1983-1994 and continued his time in uniform as a reservist until 2014.
He holds an undergraduate degree in government from the University of San Francisco and a master's degree in geography from the University of South Carolina.
He subsequently earned a master's degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College and a doctorate in geography from the University of South Carolina.
During 31 years of military service, Corson was frequently assigned overseas, including deployments to Germany, Kosovo, Iraq and Korea.
He has received 19 military medals, ribbons and decorations.
Corson and his wife, Michelle, have two daughters.
In addition to Corson's speech, ceremonies will include the posting of the colors, laying of memorial wreaths, a POW-MIA remembrance, patriotic music, a 21-gun salute and the playing of Taps.
The event will conclude with a free ham and bean lunch.
